Jo Kimmins

Eufonic Residency and Festival Exhibition

In July 2023 I was awarded a two week fully funded residency which followed up with an exhibition in August, as part of the Eufonic’s Festival in conjunction with Lo Pati Art Centre, Amposta, Catalunya.  The residency started immediately after passing my transfer viva, affording me the opportunity to completely immerse myself within my art practice to explore and to experiment new ways to perceive water and the sublime.

The residency was held in the Delta D’Ebre, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea on three sides of the peninsular, the grand Ebre river flowing through the middle and the landscape dotted with natural springs, canals and irrigation channels, I was enveloped by water. One particular place that resonated with me was the wildlife sanctuary Ullals de Baltazar (The eyes of Baltazar) where freshwater lagoons are fed from underwater springs originating in the distant mountain ranges of Montsià, Massís dels Ports and Serra del Boix-Cardó.

In addition to an artist residency, in August I exhibited work as part of the Eufonics Festival and gave an artist talk.

Spread over two weekends the festival brings together 50 artists of various disciplines, in a variety of premises that range from ancient Moorish castles to the state-of-the-art Lo Pati Art Centre. I exhibited three 360 º under water photographs of the lagoons, and two multimedia installations. The first a tryptic of three different locations within the Delta; Pont de Traves, Cemitiri de Barques and Platja Eucaliptus on a 200 cm x 120 cm screen. Each one depicting unfamiliar characteristics of water, accompanied by the strange and unusual infra water sounds. The second was a 360º video inside a lagoon accompanied by the infra water sounds at Ullals de Baltasar.

All in all it was a remarkable experience, not only to spend time immersed in my work developing new ideas and ways of working within my art practice, but also to part of a wonderful meeting place of national and international artistic professionals, programmers, curators and cultural managers.
